Bank Consumer Complaints

Similar to other consumer complaints, bank consumer complaints can be filed with the primary consumer protection authority, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection is responsible for first, regulation consumer law, and secondly, enforcing that law. For purposes of consumer law enforcement, the FTC takes on all types of consumer complaints, of which millions are filed per year. A bank consumer complaint, which is one that refers to the bank as the perpetrator, could also be filed with the FDIC or Federal Reserve. To file a complaint against a bank or lender, consumers can either report the violation using the Federal Reserve's website or call to make their complaint. The Federal Reserve investigates and attends to complaints that consist of violations to the Truth in Lending Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Equal Credit Oppurtunity Act. Bank consumer complaints are also filed with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, a government agency for which all banks are required to obtain membership.
