Bank Consumer Protection

Laws in the United States protect consumers from a large number of unfair business practices. Lending is an especially important business practice to consumers, and one that also is duly regulated by such consumer laws. Consumer receive bank consumer protection from a number of laws - the Consumer Leasing Act, the Fair Debt Collection Act, the Truth and Lending Act, and Fair and Accurate Transaction Act, to name a few of the common. By way of these laws, consumers receive rights to lending without discrimination, proper credit reports, access information about their records, and to be disclosed of hidden fees, among various other rights. When any of these rights are denied by a bank, there are two authorities with which a consumer may file a complaint. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) governs consumer law in general and should therefore be contacted if you have been victim to general consumer issues with your bank, especially identity theft. The Federal Reserve is a government agency that is particular to banking and lending, so since they govern banking practices, reporting a complaint with them may be of a greater advantage in terms of probable resolution.
