Comsumer Complaints

Consumer law in the United States, and the rights provided by this law, are supplemented by a very well-structured complaint system for consumers. When a violation of the law occurs, consumer can opt to make a complaint with the appropriate office before even consulting with an attorney. Complaints can be filed either at the federal or state level, using either the Federal Trade Commission or the consumer protection offices within each estate. Following their filing, complaints are investigated by these agencies to determine their validity. If a complaint constitutes an actual violation, mediation will be the first course of action, during which the office will contact the business to correct the wrongdoing out of court. If the case has presented itself as an issue for many consumers the consumer protection office may choose to file a lawsuit on behalf of the state as well as make necessary prosecutions. Otherwise, unsuccessful mediations will generally be taken to district court or small claims court, where the case will come to trial and be decided at the court's disgression.
