According to the law, consumers are granted with certain legal rights, known as consumer rights in this context. When dealing in any area of commerce, the law first requires that things are performed in a fair and appropriate manner. As such, the consumer receives a large range of rights that must be fulfilled by the business or individual on the opposite side of business. In terms of buying products, consumers have the right to receive what they paid for, be notified of return policies, and have warranties honored. Car sales, in particular, are often governed by state laws that protect consumers from merchants who sell "lemon" vehicles. When lending or credit is offered, the consumer again receives legal protection from consumer laws of the Fair Lending Act, Truth In Lending Act, and Fair Credit Reporting Act, federal laws that prohibit lending companies from practices such as discrimination, hidden fees, and inaccurate credit reporting.
