Consumer Complaint Center

A wide array of organizations and groups are available to handle consumer complaints. As part of the government, the Federal Trade Commission, state consumer protection agencies, and local consumer protection agencies can each receive consumer complaints and offer assistance. For non-individual cases that prove significant following investigation, the Federal Trade Commission has the power to take on lawsuits and prosecute guilty parties, as does the attorney general in each state. Aside from these programs, many private companies, unrelated to the government, offer forms of help to consumers that have been victims of fraud or scam. The Better Business Bureau, for example, acts upon its consumer complaints, offering resolution to disputes, informing the public of scams, and educating consumers in general about consumer protection. Many news stations operate for consumer protection as well, using its media authority to raise awareness about unreliable or unfair companies. Sometimes, the negative publicity posed by these programs is able to change a company's willingness to cooperate with a consumer who has been wrongfully treated.
