Within some companies, especially large sellers, something known as a consumer complaint department may be part of consumer affairs. This department will receive complaints, communicate with consumers, and hopefully solve issues before they become real problems. Still, even in companies who are dedicated to resolving complaints, discrepancies are bound to occur, making it improbable that all consumer complaints will be solved by the company. If the complaint involves an illegal violation of consumer law, however, the consumer has the right to have their issue attended to, and can file a complaint elsewhere when the company has failed them. Commonly, complaints are taken up with the Federal Trade Commission, state/local consumer protection agencies, or private agencies, whose consumer complaint departments are able to investigate and take certain actions on the behalf of consumer's. If an investigation finds the impending issue to be a violation of consumer law, the agency will proceed to attempt steps of mediation or arbitration, which is often times successful as the guilty party may not wish to face a lawsuit. Yet still, some cases will need to be taken further, being filed as lawsuits in district court by the consumer and brought to trial for the court to decide.
