Consumer Protection Complaints

Numerous consumer protection laws exist throughout the United States, both on a federal and state level. These laws, such as the Truth In Lending Act and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, offer consumers protection from fraud, deception, and other forms of wrongful treatment that could occur in trade. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates and enforces these laws to ensure that consumer really are protected, doing so through consumer education and also through consumer protection complaints. If and when a consumer experiences a violation of consumer law, they have the power to file such a complaint, reporting the unlawful occurrence either online or by telephone. Complaints will be investigated and then placed in the Consumer Sentinel, a database that is accessible by law enforcement officials. In the same manner, consumers can also file complaints with their state/local consumer protection agencies, who offer assistance in matters that relate to state laws and individual cases. When consumer protection complaints are filed with state/local agencies, individual cases will undergo investigation, mediation, and arbitration. If not solved successfully there, consumers will receive instruction on other agencies to contact and how to file a lawsuit in district court.
