In matters of consumer protection, debt and specifically debt collection are subject to certain guidelines set out by consumer law. According to the Fair Debt collection Practices Act (FDCPA), personal, family, and household debts are legally allowed, but only if they are performed in an appropriate manner. Although the consumer may not have paid, they are still rightfully entitled to fair treatment under the law. The FDCPA states various requirements that must be kept during the debt collection process, including appropriate times of contact, places of contact, phone identification, and rules on collector honesty. Also, the law requires that consumers are granted with rights to their credit, especially in the practice of credit reporting. In case a debt is not properly recorded, consumers have the right to periodically view their report and dispute any inaccurate or fraudulent records.
