Government Consumer Protection

The United States' government consumer protection is not only evident in the laws, it can also be seen in the various governmentally administered consumer protection agencies. Presiding at a national level, the FTC is the topmost governmental body that supports the interests of consumers through consumer protections. The Federal Trade Commission consists of three main branches, one of which is the Bureau of Consumer Protection, a branch devoted entirely to the purpose of consumer protection. Operating below the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection, smaller, locally dedicated offices exist at the state and local governments. Each state contains an attorney general's office, and each office usually has a department for consumer protection, just as the FTC does. With either of the three levels of government offices, federal, state, or local, consumers can file a complaint stating the alleged violation that has occurred. Once an investigation has been completed, an initial attempt for mediation can occur, followed by a lawsuit and a possible prosecution if this step is unsuccessful.
