National Consumer Protection Week

In the United States, consumers are protected by a range of laws, referred to as consumer protection laws. Protection also extends beyond just the law - the government and the public combine to form a very advantageous system in support of consumer protection. Directly from the government, consumers can obtain access to assistance for handling violations of consumer law. National Consumer Protection Week, for example, is a week sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission that is devoted to educating consumers with an understanding of consumer law. Without having filed a lawsuit, consumers also can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or state and local consumer agencies. After filing a complaint, investigation of cases will begin and possible resolutions will be presented, such as mediation or arbitration. Many non-governmental agencies also provide similarly structured complaint systems, such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Additionally, a number of consumer groups are constantly striving to implement changes to US consumer protection policy. Groups such as AARP, Consumer Federation of American, and the National Consumer League are also involved as sponsors of National Consumer Protection Week alongside the FTC.
