Possible Tax Deduction for Florida Homeowners
July 23, 2009
Thousands of Florida residents have recently submitted complaints about the drywall in their homes to the Florida Department of Health. According to the reports, the drywall is cracking and crumbling and residents are suffering from headaches, nosebleeds and breathing problems.
The drywall was imported from China and was used by builders for several years before the problems began to arise. Tests have not conclusively shown a connection between the composition of the drywall and the health problems. However, the symptoms seem to be consistent among those with the drywall.
Many builders have offered to refund or reinstall the drywall. However, for those homeowners who are stuck in the unfavorable conditions, the federal government has proposed a tax deduction worth the lost value of the home because of the drywall.
Some families have moved out of their homes until renovations can be completed. They will not be compensated for rent in another dwelling. Thousands of other families struggle already to pay their mortgages and are not able to pay rent on another home or apartment.
